If being prepared is what will give you confidence in addressing your audience, then you must to do it.
An effective public speaker prepares before going to any speaking engagement. Your total appearance affects your performance when you're speaking in public; therefore, it is necessary for you to prepare your whole ensemble. You must look respectable and decent with your outfit, but not too much because you might appear stiff and unapproachable before your audience. A coat and tie for the gentlemen and closed shoes for the ladies are the standard in public speaking.
The most important thing to prepare before speaking in public is your notes. Make sure that your note is complete and it contains all the information you want to say to your audience. It must also contain all the figures and data that your visual aid contains. This should be handy so that incase some technical glitch unexpectedly prevent your visual aid from popping on the screen. This will also be helpful if you're caught out of words on stage. You can just glance on your notes to get back on track again.
If you are an amateur public speaker, rehearsing your lines aloud will help you become more familiar with what you're going to say to your audience. For best results, rehearse your lines at least a couple of days before speaking in public. You must not just read your speech in your mind. Utter the words out loud!
Its only natural for you to feel nervous in front of your audience - don't worry even seasoned public speakers feel the same way. A few hours or minutes before speaking in public, it pays for you to do some routine that calms the nerves - and it does not include smoking! Smoking can actually dry your throat; it's never good to have dry mouth when you're on stage.
