What is public speaking? Well in its most basic sense public speaking refers to any type of verbal communication that you share with another person or group of people. It could be in an informal setting like lunch with friends or it could be a formal setting like giving a presentation to the board members of your company.
Not only is public speaking an effective form of communication, it is also a great networking and branding tool. If you give a powerful presentation and engage the members of your audience, they will remember you for a long time to come.
No matter the type of public speaking you are doing, speaking and presenting is a skill that must be practiced constantly or else it will atrophy, it is not like riding a bike, a lack of practice will dull your proficiency.
It is a good idea to practice your public speaking whenever you get the opportunity. You can give free presentations at your local chamber of commerce, kiwis club, or networking group. Make sure that you are giving quality, information filled presentations, to build your credibility. Do give your audience a sales pitch unless it is your job to do so, and in that case make an effort to make your speech sound more informative and less sales-ish.
Doing this regularly in the beginning will be good for you for a number of reasons. Aside from all the public speaking practice you will be getting by doing all those presentations, you are also getting free publicity which is never a bad thing and more importantly you are branding yourself as an expert in your field and once people start coming to you for advice you can package some of your information into products that you can have available for sale after your presentations. This will start to generate some basic income from your speaking.
The more you practice your craft and improve your speaking and presenting skills you might start to get a few inquiries from companies or groups that would like to pay you to give a presentation for them.
This is exactly how many successful dynamic speakers have gotten their start. If you do a good job and always over deliver, you will quickly build a clientele and a solid reputation.
Now this all sounds quite grand, but this will only come after taking the first step towards public speaking and that is actually getting up there and speaking. The problem is that if you’re like many people then the thought of speaking in public doubtlessly scares the heck out of you.
This is normal and if you are willing to put some effort into it, you can learn to overcome this fear and then move on to develop powerful public speaking abilities.
