While some people are born with a natural flare for speaking and presenting, nobody is born with dynamic public speaking abilities. It is a learned skill and one that takes different amounts of time and practice for each person to master. But the important thing to remember is that anyone who is willing to put in the effort can with practice become a dynamic speaker.
One thing you will find that will jumpstart you on the road to dynamic public speaking is to learn how to connect with your audience. A speaker who can achieve a level of connection with their listeners simply through the power of their words and voice will be 90 times as effective as another speaker without the ability.
Know and study your audience beforehand. If you are being asked to speak somewhere, do not be afraid to ask your host for an audience background as it will only help you to better deliver your message. Find out what’s important to them, their educations, their common fears and or goals. You also want to be aware of any cultural issues that might arise due to your presentation. You are doing this so you can tailor your presentation to fit your audience. One audience might respond well to one set of key points, while another audience might connect better with completely different points. This is crucial to dynamic public speaking!
Take ownership of your material. This is your presentation, and you need to personalize it with your own unique style. Don’t be fake, but let your personality infuse what you have to say. Audiences can spot a canned speech a mile off and will zone out, but show them a speaker with energy and an enjoyable message and you will grab their attention.
Dynamic public speaking tip – MOVE! Dynamic presenters hardly ever stay still, they are always moving. However, this does not mean they are moving all over the stage or jumping around our making huge gestures with their arms. All of their movements are completely natural looking, but are also very controlled and are used to emphasize key points, mesmerize their audiences and control the rhythm of the presentation.
You also want to avoid hiding behind the podium. Let the audience see you. You want to convey an image of truthfulness and trustworthiness. Standing behind the podium is sometimes subconsciously associated with having something to hide. You also want to make sure to show the audience the palms of your hands for the same reason. Use this information as a guide to help you on the way to dynamic public speaking.
