Effective Public Speaking Guide

The goal of all speakers should ultimately be effective public speaking. This means mastering the fundamentals, practicing your craft, rehearsing your speeches and planning out your presentations all the way through.

Effective public speaking can be likened to building a strong foundation for a building. If the foundation isn’t strong then the building will collapse. Public speaking is much the same and that’s why it is very important to always prepare thoroughly beforehand so that there are no surprises later on.

Below you will find some tips and insights that will improve your chances of effective public speaking and a successful presentation.

If appropriate and it most always is. Name your speech with a powerful headline that grabs attention and sums up your presentation.

You have a number of options to help you select a strong title for your speech. While some speakers name their speech right from the get go, it is much easier to form your presentation and then create your title afterwards that way you can craft a title that is exactly related to your material.

You could go with a how-to theme, or asking a question, another good one is to use numbers in your title, like the "20 best ways to...". By just having a strong headline type title you will better brand your speech and bring you one step closer to effective public speaking.

It is also absolutely crucial that you sit down and outline your presentation on paper or in power point. This outline will be the framework that guides you through your presentation and keeps you on track.

You don’t have to do anything fancy with your outline for effective public speaking. Just a basic outline in Microsoft word using some or all of the following components:

Title - The title of your speech prominently displayed at the top of your outline.

Main Points - These are main topics you will cover in your presentation.

Sub Points - These are the bullet points that you want to cover for each of the main points.

Closing - This is where you want to post any key points you want to use in your closing as a call to action.

Use this format to work out your presentation and once you get the basic outline done you might find that you want to swap parts of the speech around to make them flow better.

Using these handy little tips to improve your ability to prepare for a presentation and you will be well on your way to effective public speaking.
