For the vast majority of people delving into the art of public speaking is something that only happens after that person has made a conscious decision to squash societies ingrained fear of public speaking. However, with practice and over time that person might find that he or she actually thrives on public speaking and will wonder how the ever got along with out it.
On order to excel at something, no matter what it is requires work and effort. The art of public speaking is no different. And while some may consider it an art form and most artists are naturally talented, this is not the case with public speaking. In truth it is more of a skill that must be practiced and cultivated rather than an innate art form within us. That being said, there is still a dynamic speaker within us all, it just takes varying amounts of proactive and training to coax it out for the world to see.
Individual motives may vary in terms of why people decide to master the art of public speaking, however no matter the motives for wanting to learn. The skills and abilities that must be learned in order to turn you into a polished presenter remain the same.
Mastering the Art of Public Speaking:
Do not be fake or pretend to be someone your not. Be yourself, the fake it till you make it philosophy only goes so far. It is not a mantra to be adopted one hundred percent, but rather to borrow from sparingly. Show the audience your real personality and drop you ego. Do this and the audience will respond positively towards you. Don’t do it and your audience will pull away from you. Nobody wants to be preached to.
Live for the moment and let free your worries when you are making a presentation. You need to be totally committed to what you are doing and focus your mind on the speech and maintaining positive thoughts. This is not the place or the time for stray thoughts of other things in your life. Random thoughts that have no bearing on your presentation will get into your conscious mind and cause you to stumble through your speech. Be committed and Focus!
Interact with your audience. Talk with them, ask them questions. Make them feel as if they are a part of your presentation rather than just someone in the audience. This is one of the biggest elements involved with the art of public speaking. And mastering it will dramatically improve your abilities as a presenter.
Following these principles and learning from you’re your mistakes you will be greatly shortening your learning curve of mastering the art of public speaking.
